Alice In Chains – Down In A Hole

Down In A Hole - Alice In Chains

“Down In A Hole” was released by Alice In Chains on Dirt, their second studio album, on September 29, 1992. The ballad is an Alice In Chains classic even though writer Jerry Cantrell was reluctant to present it to the band, feeling it was too soft. He said, in the liner notes to the Music Bank collection, “[“Down in a Hole”]’s in my top three, personally. It’s to my long-time love. It’s the reality of my life, the path I’ve chosen and in a weird way it kind of foretold where we are right now. It’s hard for us to both understand…that this life is not conducive to much success with long-term relationships.” Originally intended by Cantrell to detail the self doubt and insecurities inherent in his relationship with Courtney Clarke, once it was placed into Layne Staley’s hands the song could easily be interpreted as a startling chronicle of his death dance with heroin. Regardless of how one interprets the song it carries an overwhelming appeal that demonstrates Alice In Chains’ uncanny ability to emotionally and convincingly portray the darker side of life. Its simple chord pattern when placed against Staley’s superb passionate delivery makes for an instant classic, a song of a lifetime.

“Down in a hole, feeling so small
Down in a hole, losing my soul
I’d like to fly,
But my wings have been so denieddirt

Down in a hole and they’ve put all the stones in their place
I’ve eaten the sun so my tongue has been burned of the taste
I have been guilty of kicking myself in the teeth
I will speak no more of my feelings beneath

Down in a hole, feeling so small
Down in a hole, losing my soul
I’d like to fly but my
Wings have been so denied

Bury me softly in this womb
Oh I want to be inside of you
I give this part of me for you
Oh I want to be inside of you
Sand rains down and here I sit
Holding rare flowers (Oh I want to be inside of you)
In a tomb… in bloom
Oh I want to be inside…

Down in a hole, feeling so small
Down in a hole, losing my soul
Down in a hole, feeling so small
Down in a hole, out of control
I’d like to fly but my
Wings have been so denied”
